NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: The Standings That Really Count

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is headed for Michigan International Raceway on Sunday for the Quicken Loans 400 (1 PM ET, TNT). There are 12 races between now and the beginning of the postseason, so TheSportsNotebook is going to step back and take a bigger-picture look at how the season is shaping up.

HOW THE CHASE FOR THE CUP WORKS

The tenor of this column is geared toward fans that choose to casually follow NASCAR, and may not be aware of how the postseason rules functions, and why the points standings are not necessarily the best gauge of who’s in position to win the championship. Thus, let’s begin our overview with a brief primer on how the NASCAR “Chase For The Cup” playoffs function…

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: Biffle Needs A Win

One marquee driver having a rough 2013 got off the mat last week in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, as Tony Stewart got his first win of the season and rejuvenated his postseason hopes. Now Greg Biffle has to do the same, as the circuit heads to northeast Pennsylvania and Pocono Raceway for Sunday’s action.

Biffle is a veteran driver who started driving full-time in 2003 and placed 20th in his first two seasons. He made his first big splash in 2005 when he finished second and in the ensuing years, has enjoyed four additional Top 10 finishes, ranging from third to seventh. He’s never been outside the Top 20 and while the championship has eluded him, consistency has been a hallmark.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: Sunday At Dover

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is in Delaware this weekend, as Dover International Speedway hosts the FedEx 400 on Sunday (1 PM ET, Fox). As the drivers jostle for position in the standings, one that often gets overlooked is the man who’s quietly nestled in fourth place, and that’s Clint Bowyer.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: Can Ragan Alter The Wild-Card Picture?

The eyes of the auto racing world will be in Indianapolis on Sunday, but the eyes of TheSportsNotebook are still focused on the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The circuit will be in Charlotte for the second consecutive week, with the running of the Coca-Cola 600 (7 PM ET, Fox).

This is the first points race in two weeks—last week’s event in Charlotte was a non-binding All-Star competition, and a driver that offers some intrigue right now is David Ragan. He’s well behind in the points standing sitting on 26th, but he also has a win. Ragan is the only driver outside the Top 10 with a win and that alone makes him a factor for the postseason discussion.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: The Stars Come Out In Charlotte

Its All-Star Saturday on the NASCAR Sprint Cup series, with a non-points race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway (7:30 PM ET, Fox). This brief break in the chase for the Cup comes as Kevin Harvick is sneaking up the standings, Matt Kenseth has become the de facto leader and Kyle Busch sees danger coming from Kasey Kahne.

HARVICK HAPPIER THESE DAYS

Kevin “Happy” Harvick has been a regular on the Sprint Cup series since 2001, and a very consistent driver over his career. He’s finished in the Top 10 seven times, including back-to-back third-place finishes in 2010-11. When TheSportsNotebook did its season preview back in February, Harvick was the longshot choice recommended by our NASCAR junkie, my brother Bill, at 25-1, to win the championship.
